ABOUT THE PIECE

For my mural submission, I wanted to use the “Cabinet of Curiosities” theme. My design features a collector's display, A deer skull sits in the display surrounded by a collection of butterflies. All of the butterflies other than the “deer’s eye butterfly” are specimens that can be found in Virginia. Butterflies are often used as a symbol of transformation; the skull is in shadow but the bright butterflies around it represent life in a new form. A butterfly sits in the skull’s eye socket and the “eye” on its wing temporarily lets the deer “see” again.
