<image:caption>Wytheville, Virginia | cottageartandmusic@gmail.com Jen Otey is the Chair of the Board of Directors for Forge Appalachia and the owner of Rose Cottage School of Art and MOONbow ARTworks. She is Inspired by the environment of the place where she lives. What she sees, feels, & experiences with the land & the indigenous flora & fauna, are reflected in what she makes. The subjects in her paintings and pottery are often the physical and sometimes spiritual reflections recalled from her time spent in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Her work is connected to her rural Appalachian heritage. Growing up here, she learned from her parents and grandparents the importance of stewarding the land, by hunting, gathering, and growing their food. This deep connection to basic resources is something that is ingrained in the mountain culture and way of life. Her strong ties to the earth and its creatures, as well as how important it is to protect, conserve, and nurture these wild places and creatures and our heritage for future generations are evident in her artwork.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artist 1 - Jen Otey - ABOUT THE PIECE</image:title>
<image:caption>I have always loved the story of White Bear Whittington. My dad used to tell me that story when I was a little girl. It is an Appalachian story, somewhat similar to Beauty and the Beast. the beast is a bear by day and a man by night, named White Bear Whittington. He takes the daughter from a man who stole a basket full of white roses. On the way to his house she cries so much three drops of blood are shed from her nose on his back. They fall in love and have three children. She eventually convinces White Bear Whittington to let her take the children back to meet there grandfather on the agreement that she cannot tell anyone his name. If she does he will forget who she is and leave their home, never to return. Well, she tells his name to her father and the bear/man leaves. She tracks him by the falling of three feathers from a white dove. each feather contains a drop of blood. On the third day she meets an old wise woman in the woods and helps here process wool over three days. Each day she receives a golden nut as payment for her help. A golden chinquapin, a gold hickory nut, and a golden walnut. On the third day after receiving payment she is told to use those nuts in only a dire situation. She finds her husband sitting in a river surrounded by three women trying to wash the blood out of his shirt. Whoever washes the three drops of blood out of the shirt will marry her husband. She, of course, washes it out, just in time to have another woman trick her and steal the shirt and turn it in as her own work. The man leaves with the woman. The wife follows them home and over the course of three days and the trading of the three gold nuts to the 2nd wife gets him back.</image:caption>

After studying Fine Arts and Marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Will stepped away from art and went to work in logistics for a toy company. When lockdown happened in 2020, Will rediscovered his love of drawing and painting. <image:title>Artist 2 - Will Martin - ABOUT THE PIECE</image:title>
<image:caption>My concept is Appalachian cryptids doing everyday things in a local landmark - The historic Star Theatre in Stuart, VA. There are iconic folklore monsters such as the Mothman, Flatwoods Monster, the Snallygaster, the Grafton Monster, and the Raven Mocker doing an everyday thing, preparing to enjoy a show with friends. I love taking these ethereal creatures from legend and showing them acting just like us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artist 3 - Kaitlin Bryant Stovall - ABOUT THE PIECE</image:title>
<image:caption>For my mural submission, I wanted to use the “Cabinet of Curiosities” theme. My design features a collector's display, A deer skull sits in the display surrounded by a collection of butterflies. All of the butterflies other than the “deer’s eye butterfly” are specimens that can be found in Virginia. Butterflies are often used as a symbol of transformation; the skull is in shadow but the bright butterflies around it represent life in a new form. A butterfly sits in the skull’s eye socket and the “eye” on its wing temporarily lets the deer “see” again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artist 4 - Lisa Garrett - ABOUT THE PIECE</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea is to paint the story of the Granny Witch in the Appalachian Mountains. People living deep in the Appalachian Mountains were very self-reliant but they would go to the Granny women for healing and magic. It was not easy to get to a doctor and there was a Granny close enough to fetch for help in an emergency. These women used a combination of herbal medicine, folk magic, faith healing, and superstitions to aid the people in remote regions. As European settlers arrived in the colonies, they bought with them traditional folk magic and healing from their home countries. As they settled in, they met Native American neighbors who taught them about the plants, roots, and leaves indigenous to the Mountains. Granny magic included many different practices. Dowsing, the practice of looking for water with a forked stick or a length of copper. They often tended to the needs of women as midwives and assisted in the birth of new babies but they could also be counted on to provide herbal remedies if a young woman did not want to become pregnant. They worked as a healer, crafting poultices, salves, and teas with curative properties. Because of the religious environment of the Appalachian region, which were staunchly Protestant, most people practicing what we today call granny magic would have disagreed that what they were doing was witchcraft. In fact, many charms and spells included invocations of psalms, prayers, and verses from the Bible. Music was a large part of Appalachian Granny Magic traditions, and many of the spells were sung and danced. The tools used by Granny witches varied a bit but you could find “The Wand “, often called the “rod” for dowsing, mirrors, candles, brooms, pottery, and baskets. The Cauldrons, for making potions and herbal remedies, were found in the front yard like an “open for business sign”. The healing and magic of the Granny witches still exists in the Appalachian Mountains. It is passed down from generation to generation and the Granny knows instinctively which member of her family is the next healer, and encourages that child to learn.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Growing up my grandmother had somewhat of a cabinet of curiosities. She had taken an old printmaker's drawer and turned it into a shadow box that hung on the wall displaying miniatures and treasures from the places her and my grandfather had explored together. I found myself getting lost exploring all the little compartments filled with objects that had memory and stories attached to them. I plan to combine the two prompts. After researching Folklore of our area, I came across “granny Magic”. The idea came to mind to create a shadow box painting filled with items that an Appalachian witch might use to create spells. Incorporating the folklore of our area that I find interesting, while still adding the memory of a cabinet of curiosities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Martinsville, Virginia | madriverlauri@yahoo.com A self-taught artist, Lauri Waterfield Callison was a successful Textile Designer for over twenty years, creating artwork for a variety of clients from Martha Stewart to NASCAR, with products ranging from bedding ensembles to bandannas. In the early 2000’s, Lauri left the corporate world to hit the streams in NC as a full-time, Orvis-endorsed Fly Fishing Guide & Instructor. She spent days with clients on the water and evenings painting their trophies. Her paintings were featured on the New Jersey Trout Stamp, the North Carolina and West Virginia Wildlife calendars, as well as several regional and national publications. Her artwork at auction has raised thousands for Trout Unlimited as well as other worthy charities. Former Captain of the Remington Girls sporting clays team, Lauri’s love of the outdoors shines through every painting. A natural storyteller, Lauri paints to capture a special moment to share with her viewers or to provide a visual oasis of peace in an increasingly confusing and hectic world. “Plein air painting has added a new level of authenticity to my paintings, and I’ve often set up my easel on the edge of a field or in the middle of a favorite stretch of water, fly rod nearby. There’s always some sort of adventure that comes about during an outdoor painting session and that becomes the story that collectors enjoy sharing. When working en plein air, I usually work in acrylics, because of their quick drying time & portability, then I’ll take those pieces back to the studio to develop larger pieces from them in oil. On the water or in the woods, I always have a camera with me and use my own reference photos to paint fish & wildlife scenes. I do the occasional piece in watercolor to play with the flow of the paint, and I use acrylics in the field, but I find that oil paints have the richness & luminosity of color that I crave.” Growing up along the Blue Ridge Mountains in Roanoke, VA, Lauri lived all over North Carolina before circling back near her hometown to the little town of Martinsville, VA, very near where the Smith “River runs through it…” She enjoys small-town life in the little house at the edge of the woods that she shares with her husband, a dog, three black cats, and a supporting cast of birds, fish and wildlife. View her artwork and keep in touch at www.LWCallison.com or follow her on Facebook any time. To see her paintings in person, visit the Seaside Art Gallery in Nags Head, NC or The Snow Goose Gallery in Bethlehem, PA. Or you may visit one of several corporate collections, including Propst Distributing Company in Concord, NC; Rock Haven Shooting Preserve in Cherryville, NC; and Avis Construction and the Virginia Synod Lutheran Home, both in Roanoke, VA.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artist 9 - Sarah Booze - ABOUT THE PIECE</image:title>
<image:caption>“Watch out for the Wolfananny!” This was a phrase I often heard as a child who grew up playing in the backwoods of Stokes County, NC. The Wolfananny was a creature of folklore; a beast with no clear description, despite its canine nomenclature. When I was older, I learned the truth behind this myth: Moonshiners. Those who illegally made liquor in the old hollows around my hometown didn’t want people poking around the woods and finding their stills. So, they created the story of a beast who lived in those very woods. But many myths come from truths, and there have been multiple eye-witness accounts of…something in the forests around my hometown. My concept depicts a moonshine still in a forest hollow. Out of the swirling steam of the still rises a wolf-like creature snarling at the viewer. The light from the full moon shows the creature's form is somewhere between vaporous and solid and in the end, just like the tale of the Wolfananny, it is up to the audience to decide if this beast is one of legend, or one of flesh and bone.</image:caption>

Legend has it that long ago, fairies frolicked in the region now known as Fairystone. Upon hearing of the crucifiction of Jesus, the fairies wept tears which formed into stone crosses. These cross-like crystals are only found in a few places in the world. They are a rare and intriguing phenomenon unique to our region.</image:caption>
