Call For Artists 2024!

Pickle & Ash, a restaurant, market & bar, along with Bull Mountain Arts is calling for qualified artists to submit an ONLINE or PAPER application for one of a series of 10 paintings to be selected by a juried process. These works of art will be displayed under cover of the porch in the outdoor dining area.

Here are the two theme choices for 2024:

  • Fairy Tales and Folklore of Appalachia....done loosely in the style of the Golden Age of Illustration. Here is a link for some examples to be inspired by. https://www.pookpress.co.uk/illustrators-archive/

  • Cabinet of Curiosities....dating as far back as the 1600's, but nowadays feature collections one might find in a museum. Antiques, objects of natural history (such as stuffed animals, dried insects, shells, skeletons, herbarium, fossils) and even works of art. The odd and quirky were also encouraged for their entertainment value.

More Details:

  • Each painting will be 2 feet X 3 feet, hung vertically or landscape

  • The paintings must be painted with acrylic paints

  • Artists will be supplied with a plywood base

  • Artists will be given $200 stipend for supplies

  • Upon delivery of the completed project, individual artists will be paid the remaining $1000.

  • All completed paintings must be delivered to Calliope no later than April 30, 2024.

  • All artists applying must include a written description of what their vision is along with detailed sketches in both landscape and portrait format.

  • Each one must also submit photographs (with dimensions) of three previous pieces of work they have completed within the last five years. Technical aspects of painting will be addressed when artists have been chosen.

  • After one year the paintings will be removed and donated to Bull Mountain Arts to be sold with the proceeds going to support arts education, art organizations, and other programs benefitting local artists and educators in our community.
